Until 1929, the Vatican was largely funded through "Peter's pence" collected from the faithful. After that year, it received much of its income from investments made by the banker Bernadino Nogara in world markets and commercial enterprises. Pollard (fellow, Trinity Hall, Cambridge U.) explores the papacy's process of coming to terms with capitalism which was arguably in conflict with both church law and Catholic social teaching as well as how becoming a major financial power led the Vatican into conflict with the Allies in the Second World War.
