Miller (teacher education, Goddard College) has written or edited six previous books on the history and philosophy of educational alternatives. In this academic work, he examines the free school movement of the mid-1960s and early-1970s, in which thousands of young educators, parents and students rejected the assumptions, aims, and methods of conventional schooling in favor of experimental educational sites operating completely independent of the public school system. Miller argues that questions raised by the movement regarding traditional approaches to teaching, learning, and knowledge remain relevant to the educational challenges faced by contemporary American society.
