There are four basic types of military briefings, defined according to the purpose theyserve: information, decision, mission and staff.
Information briefings simply provide information to the listeners. The objective of thebriefing is the listener's understanding of the topic presented. Generally, the speaker offersno recommendations nor asks for any decisions. The briefing will be longer or shorterdepending on the complexity of the topic, and the familiarity of the listeners with necessarybackground information. The information briefing will generally follow a pattern similar tothe following:
1 Introduction: greet the listeners and introduce the speaker; introduce topic and scope ofthe briefing; outline the main points to be covered.
2 Body: present information in a logical sequence; avoid speaking about irrelevantinformation or topics; use audio-visual aids as appropriate.
3 Conclusion: summarise main points; ask for questions from listeners.
Decision briefings are designed to obtain a decision from the listener, such as acommanding officer. Typically a decision briefing is delivered by a staff officer who hasresearched a situation and reached conclusions about it. The decision briefing is used by thestaff officer to present findings and recommend a course of action. These briefings will varyboth in formality and content depending on the level of command, and the familiarity of thelistener with the issues involved. But even in briefings where a commander is very familiarwith the topic, and the speaker only needs to outline a few key facts, he or she should beready to answer in detail any questions the listener may ask. In other words, in some casesthe speaker may only need to present the tip of the iceberg, but may well be expected tohave a complete understanding of the whole. Because the briefing requires a decision, itmust include a precise recommendation and statement of options.
A typical format for decision briefings is:
1 Introduction: greet listeners and introduce the speaker; describe purpose of the briefing,briefly state the problem to be resolved as well as recommendation for solution.
