Behind the Badge ─ A Psychological Treatment Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers

Law enforcement officers have historically carried the major responsibility of both maintaining and overcoming regimes and power centers. From the Roman Centurion to the local Sheriff 's department, they have all carried the burden of establishing, defending, and protecting both those in power and those needing protection from those same leaders. Following on from their treatment handbook for military personnel, editors Sharon and Arthur Freeman, Bret Moore, and new editor Laurence Miller have assembled the top names in the field to discuss the role mental health practitioners have in law enforcement and security, and how to address the issues that continually come up while working with this population. Topics discussed include trauma and resilience, gender issues, substance use, and forensic and legal proceedings. There are also chapters devoted to the personal issues law enforcement officers face, as well as detailed treatment plans for clinicians.

Sharon M. Freeman Clevenger, MSN, PhD, PMHCNS-BC, ACT is the CEO and Founder of the Indiana Center for Cognition Behavior Therapy and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Indiana/Purdue Universities. She is a certified Diplomate, Fellow and Trainer by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

Bret A. Moore, PsyD, ABPP, is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 2008, Dr. Moore left active duty service in the U.S. Army, where he served as a captain and clinical psychologist with the 85th Combat Stress Control unit based in Ft. Hood, TX.

Laurence Miller, PhD, PA, is an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University and Palm Beach State College. He is a clinical and forensic police psychologist for the West Palm Beach Police Department, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, and Troop L of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Arthur Freeman, EdD, ABPP, ACT is Professor and Executive Director Clinical Psychology in Behavioral Medicine at Midwestern University. He is Past- president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy. He is a Distinguished Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
