Young, born to slave parents in Kentucky in 1864, was the last of three African-Americans to graduate from West Point during Reconstruction. He served his military career with the all-black 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments the "Buffalo Soldiers" attaining the rank of colonel by the time he retired from active duty in 1917. He was the first African-American to serve as a US military attache, accredited to Haiti and later to Liberia; he died in 1922 during a trip to Nigeria. Young's entire career was shaped by the color of his skin; he saw his work as an opportunity to show society at large that African-Americans were deserving of the rights granted them by the 14th and 15th Amendments. In his biography, Kilroy (history, Wheeling Jesuit U.) sees his work as an opportunity to resurrect the military man from the margins of US history. 作者簡介
DAVID P. KILROY is Associate Professor of History at Wheeling Jesuit University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and an M.A. from University College Dublin. This is his first book.
