Part Ⅰ Oral Presentation
Letting go of a single anchor is the simplest method for anchoring, and if the holdingground is good and sufficient cable is veered the ship will ride easily to her anchor in badweather. The disadvantage of this method is that the ship Hill take up a large amount of searoom in swinging around her anchor with the wind and tidal stream.
Mooring a ship. The object of mooring with two anchors is usually to reduce the searoom required by the ship for swinging. The anchors are let go at some distance from eachother and the ship is then secured midway between them so that she swings almost around herstem. In the Royal Navy it is known as anchoring a ship, though in earlier times it was moreprecisely called mooting a cable each to distinguish it from other methods of anchoring withtwo anchors. A ship thus moored rides in safety if the directions of the wind, current and tidalstream lie approximately along the line of the anchors, but if she rides at a large angle with thisline the cables form a taut span and the resulting heavy stress in them may cause the anchors todrag. When mooting the two anchors should therefore be let go in the line of the prevailingwind, current, or tidal stream, whichever is usually the stronger. When a ship ties athwartthe line of her anchors, she is said to lie at open hawser. To prevent turns forming in the ca-bles as the ship swings with wind and fide, a swivel is inserted between the cables and thenveered outboard. As it takes some time to unshackle this mooring swivel from the cables it isseldom used if the ship is likely to have to leave harbor on short notice.
A ship may also be moored with the object of enabling her to ride out a gale with less like-lihood of dragging her anchors. The anchors are then let go so that the ship lies with an angleof less than 20 degrees between her cables. This helps to keep the ship from yawing and di-vides the weight of the ship between the two anchors.
