First published in 1984, and reappearing here as a paperbound edition (perhaps in response to the recent protests against anti-labor initiatives of the current Republican-led Wisconsin state government), this work by Ozanne (formerly, economics, U. of Wisconsin-Madison) provides an overview of the development of the labor movement in Wisconsin from the first labor unions in the mid-19th century through to the 1930s, when the full recognition of unions by employers became the normal industry pattern (for a time). Ozanne takes a relatively standard approach to the topic, chronologically describing the founding and growth of key unions, major strikes and their outcomes, significant legal developments, and overall changing relations between employers and their work forces. Robert W. Ozanne was a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he taught American labor history for more than 25 years.
