Reich (Baylor U., Texas) examines how the Jesus of Luke communicates and what his mode of communication accomplishes. He finds in the gospel some 700 figures of speech, nearly 500 of them spoken by Jesus. Indeed nearly every sentence spoken by Jesus contains a figure of speech, so he concludes that figurative speech is his main mode of expression. The effect of that, Reich argues, is that Lukan Jesus speaks in the manner of an educated man of high social status, thereby gaining a hearing for his role-reversing message. He covers figures of speech and the stylistic virtues, the art of argumentation, and the power of figures of speech in communicating role-reversing message. The quotations are in Greek.
