Vidan (South Slavic languages and literatures, Harvard U.) and Crnkovic (Slavic and comparative literature, U. of Washington) bring together essays from film scholars and interviews with film practitioners in order to present an analytical portrait of Croatian film. Overarching topics addressed by the opening contributions include the roots of Croatian cinema within the Yugoslav framework and its development since independence, the social role of documentary over the past 20 years, Croatian contributions to animation, and gender in contemporary Croatian film. Interviews with filmmakers Rajko Grlic, Vinko Bresan, Josko Barusic, and Nenad Puhovski that address their own oeuvres and comment on practical issues of filmmaking are then presented.
