Fred "Duke" Slater (1898-1966) played in the NFL from 1922 to 1931; he was the only African American player in the NFL between 1927 and 1929. Two decades later, he became a judge in Chicago's Cook County Municipal Court in 1948, and in 1960, he was the first African American to serve as a judge on Chicago's Superior Court. This biography details Slater's life and legacy, paying special attention to the 1930s, when he organized and coached several African American all-star teams to combat the ban on black players in the NFL that began in 1933. The book also emphasizes his career as a coach at the University of Iowa and his role in recruiting black athletes to Iowa City. B&w historical and contemporary photos are included. Appendices list facts on point totals, games, and African Americans in the NFL. Rozendaal is affiliated with the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
