The camshaft's function is to open the engine valves positively and timely in a definite scqucnce, and to control their closing against the return action of the valve springs. This must execute the lifting movement of the valves at the correct time and in the correct sequence and facilitate closing of the valves by the valve spring. The camshaft cams open the inlet and exhaust valvcs against the spring force of the valve springs via transfer elements, e.g. Tappets. The camshaft, bearings are lubricated with oil supplied under pressure from the main gallery in the cylinder block.
The Valves
Two different types are used: inlet and exhaust valves. The engine valve is a device designed to open a passage when moving in one direction and to close it when moving in the opposite direction. The exhaust valve allows the burned gases to leave the combustion chamber during the exhaust stroke while the intake valve allows the air-fuel mixture to enter the combustion chamber during the intake stroke. In the interests of further improving the gas cxchange in the cylinder, engines are also equipped with two or three inlet valves together with one or two exhaust valves.
A valve consists of a head and stem. The diameters of the valve heads and the valve lift must be sufficiently large as to facilitate as much as possible an unhindered gas exchange. For better engine breathing, the inlet valve has a larger diameter than the exhaust one. As the valves are not equally heated in the running engine, they are made from different materials. The material of the exhaust valve can endure higher temperature than that of the inlet one.
The Springs
The cam, lifiers, pushrods, and rocker arms are used to open the valves. But how is the valve closed at the right time? Remember, the cam can only push on the other parts of the valve train. It cannot pull them. This closes the valve at the end of the induction or exhaust stroke. The valve spring fits under the rocker arm and coils around the stem of the valve. Occasionally even two valve springs are arranged inside each other.
