United States At War 1941-45, Third Edition

This portable (5.5x8"), accessible narrative account for students and general readers recaptures an important time in American and world history, from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the atomic bombing of Japan, and America at the end of the war. This third edition delves more deeply into the war's moral dimension, asking whether the US could have used its power to limit the extent of the Holocaust by adopting a more liberal refugee policy or bombing the railroad lines that carried victims to the death camps. Other new moral issues now discussed are the impact of the war on those who were invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union, and Churchill's suppression of India and indifference to its famine. Gary R. Hess is an Emeritus Distinguished Research Professor of History at Bowling Green State University. His research and teaching interests focused on U.S. foreign relations from World War II to the present. He is the author of several books, including most recently: Presidential Decisions for War (rev. ed., 2009); and Vietnam: Explaining America’s Lost War (2008). He has been a four-time Fulbright Scholar/Lecturer in India. He is a past president of both the Society for Historians of American Foreign Realtions and the Ohio Academy of History. Both organizations recognized his scholarly and service contributions through their Norman and Laura Graebner Award and Distinguished Historian Award, respectively.
