Fifty Years Below Zero is Charles Brower's account of his fifty years in the Arctic. He shares what he knew about whaling, pioneering, and about the Native people with whom he lived. Brower tells vividly of Native Alaskans' daily lives and customs and the impact they had on his own life.
His story is also full of high adventure and rich with details about the many visitors who became his friends - the explorers, whalers, traders, missionaries, everyone who for any reason came within reach of Brower's help and his cheer. They included Roald Amundsen, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Captain Bob Bartlett, and the ships' captains and crews who, according to the author, were "men the like of whom the world has never known."

作者簡介

Charles Brower, the "King of the Arctic," was born in New York City in 1863. At the age of twenty, he was invited to join a small party to investigate coal mining possibilities near Cape Lisburne, Alaska, on the Arctic Ocean. Attracted by the lure of wide horizons and far places, he accepted the invitation. Except for occasional visits "Outside," Brower remained within the Arctic Circle for the rest of his life, living and working at Point Barrow, Alaska, where he died in 1945.
