Following their 1892 imprisonment in the Western Pennsylvania Penitentiary for the failed assassination attempt on steel magnate Henry Clay Frick in revenge for his role in the violence against striking workers at the Homestead Steelworks, European-American anarchists Alexander Berkman, Henry Bauer, and Carl Nold (the latter two of who actually had no involvement in the assassination attempt, according to the introduction) sought to further their communal anarchist ideals and expose the brutality of American prison conditions by coordinating and smuggling out writings, 60 "booklets" in all, for prospective publication in a single volume to be titled Prison Blossoms. Originally written in Latin and a colloquial form of German and stored away in an international archive, this volume represents the first time most of these writings have ever been collected and presented in English. As such it represents a valuable collection of documents for scholars and students of labor politics, anarchism, and/or the American penal system.
