At Empire's Edge: Project Paphlagonia: Regional Survey in North-Central Turkey

This is the final volume published in connection with Project Paphlagonia, a fieldwork program conducted in north-central Turkey between 1997 and 2001. Editor Matthews, under whose auspices the project was conducted (while he was director of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara), leads off by tracing the history, context, and rationale for the project, and approaches and methods used in its intensive survey and in interpretation of findings. Subsequent chapters discuss geological, geographical, and geomorphological contexts of human interaction in the area, and the area's history beginning in the Palaeolithic and proceeding through the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, and the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, with further investigation of insights from Ottoman documents and discussion of trends and patterns in settlement through time.
