Architect and landscape architect Condon (landscape and livable environments, U. of British Columbia) offers advice to urban designers, policy makers, developers, regulators and citizen activists on ways to help their city weather the looming climate change. His introductory chapter traces changes in Western cities since the end of World War II, describes the problems that are emerging, and suggests reasons for hope. Then he details his seven rules: restore the streetcar city; design an interconnected street system; locate commercial services, frequent transit, and schools within a five-minute walk; locate good jobs close to affordable homes; provide a diversity of housing types; create a linked system of natural areas and parks; and invest in lighter, greener, cheaper, smarter infrastructure. 作者簡介
Patrick M. Condon is a Professor at the University of British Columbia, affiliated with the James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable Environments. He is the author of numerous books including Design Charrettes for Sustainable Communities (Island Press).
