Calling All Foreign Language Teachers: Computer-Assisted Language Learning in the Classroom

For foreign language teachers, this guide describes the use of technology in the classroom, or computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Preceded by an explanation of research on the topic, it consists of about 100 activities explained in conjunction with the American Council for Teaching Foreign Languages and the International Society for Technology in Education's National Educational Technology Standards. Erben (ESOL program, U. of Tampa) and Sarieva, a student in the second language acquisition/instructional technology program at the U. of South Florida, compile activities contributed by foreign language educators mostly from the US, with guidance on how to use the technologies. These educators were formerly students in the doctoral program in second language acquisition and instructional technology at the U. of South Florida and participated in a course from which the book is based. Activities include using software, desktop publishing, creating sound files, video, online communities and chat, tools for classroom management, and electronic assessment, with details on proficiency level, time, correlating standards, and skills.
