Dewey's (Vanderbilt U.) study of the modern South and its interaction with the rest of the US is concerned with four major themes: sectional conflict, in Congress, in national elections, in the struggle for economic advantage, and in the media; the part played by compromise and accommodation in the relationship between North and South; regional convergence; and the persistence despite convergence of a distinctive regional culture in the South, evident in its religious life, its "subculture of violence," its emphasis on family and place, and in the explosion of literary talent the region has seen since the 1920s. 作者簡介
Dewey W. Grantham is the Holland N. McTyeire Professor of History Emeritus at Vanderbilt University. A former president of the Southern Historical Association, he has taught, researched, and written about the South and American history for more than forty-one years. Among his books, Hoke Smith and the Politics of the New South won the Charles S. Sydnor Award from the Southern Historical Association. He is also the author of The Regional Imagination: The South and Recent American History, Southern Progressivism: The Reconciliation of Progress and Tradition, and The Life and Death of the Solid South.
