While Filou ran a mental health clinic for jails--and inaugurated an award-winning program for Suffolk County, New York--she began studying Spanish to help her communicate with inmates. That led to a doctorate in Hispanic languages and literature. Retired now, she remains active literary scholarship, and here she examines how Rossi confronts the established psychoanalytic theory that marginalizes women.
