The first edition is cited in Books for College Libraries, 3d. ed. German philosopher of humanistic studies Gadamer (1900-2002) first published what turned out to be his most important work in 1960. Looking beyond the self-consciousness of science, he discusses the tense relationship between truth and methodology. In examining the different experiences of truth, he aims to "present the hermeneutic phenomenon in its fullest extent." Weinsheimer and Marshall revise the 1975 translation of the second edition, drawing on the fourth edition. Their goal is not strict linguistic accuracy, but making the ideas clear to English readers. Hans-Georg Gadamer was born on 11 February 1900 and died on 13 March 2002. He was the author, most notably, of Truth and Method, and, more recently, of The Beginning of Philosophy and The Beginning of Knowledge.
