Having talked with head monks, novices, and laypeople associated with eight branch temples for over 10 ten years, he discusses how ideas about behavior, roles, and appearances are formed; how the concept of decline and revival shapes discourse about Buddhist monasticism; the relationship between members of the sangha and their lay patrons; and how emotions influence social relationships and aesthetic sensibilities.
