The eighteenth century saw the rise of an affluent middle class in Europe. Heretofore, most studies have focused on France, England and America. North (modern history, Ernst Moritz Arndt University) changes the view to Germany. He also broadens the aspects of life covered to include home decor, clothing and comestibles as well as art, literature, theater and music. Unlike in some other places, North sees a homogeneity developing in the tastes of the wealthy German bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. He also notes the role of the providers of these cultural goods: art dealers, printers, booksellers, fashion magazines and coffee shop owners, among others.
