Immigration, Diversity, And Education

The children of immigrants currently constitute nearly 25% of US children and, while researchers have slowly begun to focus on this group, only recently has the research community begun to turn to children during their first decade of life, a critical time in terms of educational outcomes. Grigorenko (Yale U.) and Takanishi (president, Foundation for Child Development) present 15 papers exploring a range of issues of development, education, and identity for this group. Examples of topics discussed include disentangling nativity status, race/ethnicity, and country of origin in predicting the school readiness of young immigrant children; early Head Start and the health of Latino infants and toddlers; Latino/a immigrant parents' voices in mathematics education; the home and school environment interface in emergent literacy in immigrant children; and special education needs of children in immigrant families.
