Jean Paulhan is best known for the many editorial activities through which he encouraged and published an entire generation of French writers in the first half of the twentieth century. This volume of Yale French Studies is the first collection of essays in English devoted to his work and offers a sustained reflection on the interrelation between two crucial focal points of his thinking: rhetoric and power. The volume includes translations of two short but potent texts by Paulhan from either side of World War II which underline the originality of his thinking about the meaning of democracy and provide fine examples of his deceptively casual style.
