In this new book, author Jonathan Kirsch explores the final struggle between monotheism and polytheism in the ancient world, a war that was fought by a series of charismatic, visionary but also violent monarchs in the name of the Only True God - an Egyptian pharaoh, a Jewish king, and two Roman emperors.
Contrary to the conventional wisdom of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the world of classical paganism was not steeped in sin. In fact, religious liberty and diversity were core values of classical paganism, and it was monotheism that introduced the terrors of true belief, including holy war, martyrdom, inquisitions, and crusades. The "war of God against the gods" reached its climax during the reigns of two Roman emperors - Constantine, who started the Christian revolution that made the modern world, and Julian, who tried to restore paganism, all in the tumultuous period of the fourth century in the Roman Empire.
These two men, related by blood - but who fought on opposite sides - were motivated by far more than true belief. They were also driven by intimate family politics and imperial ambitions. They are a rare example of a moment when two men, acting out of their own personal passions, literally changed the history of the world.

Jonathan Kirsch is a book columnist for the Los Angeles Times and author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed King David, Moses, The Harlot by the Side of the Road, and The Woman Who Laughed at God. He lectures and consults widely on biblical, literary, and legal topics and is a past president of PEN Center USA West.
