This book is one outcome of the three-year research project Making a Good Impression: Pottery of the Sahara-Sahel Borderlands, which engaged 11 researchers on three continents, two 2008 workshops, and support from several institutions. It explores the decoration of African pottery with impression objects, known as roulettes, onto the surface of pots before they are fired. A wide range of objects can be rolled, rocked, impressed singly or pivoted. The first two sections cover modern roulettes in sub-Saharan Africa, and a method for identifying rolled impressed decorations; they are presented in English and French. The third section, only in English, surveys types of roulettes identified by archeologists: twisted cord, cord-wrapped, simple and composite braided cord, folded strip, knotted strip, and braided strip.
