本教材是為了適應金融高等院校的教學要求，培養更多的跨國型、應用型金融與保險專業人才而編寫的雙語教材。本教材適合金融與保險專業本科學生使用，也可作為保險公司管理人員的培訓教材、各保險公司高層次專業人員的出國前培訓教材和專業英語選拔考試的參考教材；同時也適合各高等院校英語專業的學生以及有興趣自學金融與保險專業知識的學生自學使用。
本教材共有12章，內容包括風險與保險、保險的職能與作用、保險的基本原理等。除了正常的課文注解、課後練習之外，還在課後增加了案例分析，以便學生課堂討論或課後分析這些案例。為了方便學生課前預習，本書在附錄中列出了保險專業術語和專業英語詞匯。學生通過對該雙語課程的學習，能提高閱讀金融與保險方面英文原著的能力，更多地了解國外的金融與保險市場，進而更多地了解金融與保險方面最前沿的理論與實務，為我國金融與保險業的進一步發展做出貢獻。

袁建華，男，1960年10月出生，碩士，湖南益陽人，保險學副教授。1983年畢業于湖南吉首大學英語系。1992年畢業于上海師範大學英語系，獲文學碩士學位。1995年10月，經過選拔考試，被中國人民保險公司公派到英國倫敦CIC Holdings培訓中心學習，獲General Insurance & Reinsurance證書。回國后，繼續從事保險理論和保險實務的教學與研究。2002年7月，從中國保險管理幹部學院調到廣東金融學院保險系任教。近幾年來在國內學術刊物上發表了多篇論文，主持過廣東省省級課題和廣東金融學院院級課題。
