與你擦肩而過的人信仰著些甚麼?異端、邪說、妖言惑眾――是誰下的定義?穿梭在香港這座石屎叢林中,與12位少數宗教人士來一場不期而遇的邂逅。自2020年始,Diversity in Hong Kong這個由一群香港學者牽頭發起的多元文化研究計劃開始了一個項目,關注香港的少數宗教,並聯絡到12位信仰著不同宗教的信眾。「在何種香港的處境下促使您信仰了這一宗教?」、「信仰了這一宗教後,又認識了香港的何種面貌?」,在不強調知性分析、不深入解釋教義的情況下,《街坊眾神》嘗試帶領讀者進入「香港街坊」的異質生活。印度教、道教、東正教會、泰國佛教、中國佛教、日本真言宗、伊斯蘭教、天主教聖方濟小兄弟會、錫克教、基督教後期聖徒會、巴哈伊教與「正念」,儘管受訪者信仰各異,他們在香港中也不算是特別的人物。我們不能看到他們在生命中某一時刻推動了香港整體社會作出歷史性變遷;但述說他們在神聖與世俗之間的出入,有如在油畫中刻畫光影變化,當中包含了對時間和空間想像的改變,也反映了思想與價值的更新。本書命名為《街坊眾神》,是希望從香港社會底層出發,以公共輿論的角度梳理香港複雜而多層次的歷史。香港存在著種種來源不同的宗教信仰,卻未有出現教派之間的勢不兩立,其實是十九世紀以來的重大奇蹟。「本書為讀者介紹的是一個名為『香港』的交流空間,即使參與交流的群體各自有不同的價值觀,他們卻彷彿構成了共同信納的輿論。」――孔德維博士專文導讀
