  • Richard Weight's study places 'Porridge' in the context of 1970s social upheavals, explores how the series satirises structures of class and authority through Fletch and Godber's battles to outwit the prison officers Mr Mackay and Mir Barrowclough, and traces its influences on tv comedy that followed.
  • RICHARD WEIGHT is a writer and broadcaster based in London. He is the author of 'We Are The Modernists! The Rise and Reign of British Youth Culture Since 1950' (Random House, 2009) and 'Patriots: National Identity in Britain 1940-2000' (Pan Macmillan, 2002), which was shortlisted for the 2003 Orwell Prize for political writing. He was principal researcher and a co-author of Edward Heath's autobiography 'The Course of My Life' (Hodder& Stoughton 1998) and the co-editor of
'The Right To Belong: Citizenship and National Identity in Britain 1930-1960' (I.B. Tauris, 1998). He has written and presented documentaries for the BBC and discusses the nature of modern Britain on productions as diverse as The Today Programme and Richard and Judy. He is a contributor to the 'Times' and was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and of the Royal Historical Society.
