Using Corpora in Translation Studies

The aim of this book is to explain and illustrate how to carry out research in translation studies using corpora and corpus analysis tools. Despite this being one of the fastest growing areas in translation research, new researchers coming from a humanities background are sometime reluctant to embrace the use of computers as a research tool. This book will address the needs of such researchers by explaining clearly and in detail how to go about creating and using corpora. Using Corpora in Translation Research is not only an introductory book but also offers critical reflections on the methodology, sums up and assesses the work carried out so far and describes how the methodology can be applied to new areas of research.
Divided into two parts, the first section explains what is involved in a corpus-based approach to the study of translation. It defines the key concepts, analyses the principles of a corpus-based approach, and looks at the different types of translational corpora. The second part of the book looks at how to create and use corpora for translation research. The book takes a step-by-step approach, explaining how to gather and interpret data from a corpora. This section is illustrated with case studies, and contains exercises and suggestions for further reading.
