This volume of the catalogue raisonne of The Queen's Pictures covers the Royal Collection of miniatures and enamels painted during the reigns of George I to William IV. It includes portraits by Zincke and Liotard commissioned by George II, Queen Caroline and their son Frederick Prince of Wales; the splendid collection painted by Meyer, Miles, Smart and Ozias Humphry; and the magnificent miniatures by Cosway, Henry Bone and Grimaldi, collected by the Prince Regent.
Prince Albert, together with Queen Victoria, first classified and catalogued the miniatures; it was he who brought into the Royal Collection the Coburg portraits. Subsequently the Collection was made even richer by the enthusiasm and discrimination of King George V and Queen Mary.
The Collection as a whole is undoubtedly the finest in the world. The miniatures catalogued here contain vital information for the study of social history, costume, iconography, and for the actual technique of miniature painting.
