每年農曆3月23日左右，春雨綿綿，間歇的細雨伴著暖陽之際，台灣的天空開始很「媽祖」。數十萬信徒，白日接續黑夜，主要沿著西部海岸平原，南北縱貫各個媽祖名廟之間，八至九天時間內，行走三四百公里，構成了人類文化的巨大景觀。
國立自然科學博物館於民國100年，舉辦了一個有關這種朝聖現象的特展「流動的女神：台灣媽祖進香文化特展」。特展籌備歷經一年半，結合眾多媽祖宮廟、信徒、文史工作者與專家學者的力量。本專刊即為配合展覽的出版品，專刊內容主要分兩個部分：一為媽祖信仰與進香研究之專文五篇，作者包含了林美容、張珣、林茂賢、李奕興、黃旭；另一部分為展示內容，包含了展出的文物圖錄、展場解說文字、影像及展場空間設計。
In May 2011, the National Museum of Natural Science began an exhibition —Matsu Pilgrimages: A Mobile Goddess. Most people tend to confine themselves to a quite narrow outlook when it comes to what the Museum is supposed to do. This is not hard to understand as the term “natural science” easily gets all the attention. But the truth is that regardless of their specialties all museums share something in common, that is, they are all cultural institutions. In the West, a natural science museum is often better known as a museum of natural history where anthropology plays a big part. And a wealth of cultural implications lies therein. When the Museum was still in its preparatory stage, “natural science” instead of “natural history” was adopted in naming it for fear of causing confusion among the local populace. But more than two decades have seen the Museum make much headway in anthropological studies. It is about time for the public to rectify their perception of the Museum as to what it is really about through its exhibitions.
