商品簡介
Classics scholar and archaeologist Oleson (U. of Victoria, Canada) is a specialist in ancient technology, particularly ships, harbors, and water supply systems. Since the 1980s, with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the U. of Victoria, he has been involved with more than a dozen excavation projects of Humayma (ancient Hawara)--a settlement in southern Jordan founded in the first century BC and occupied through the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods. (In his preface Oleson mentions "el-Humeima," which is another transliteration from Arabic of the location's name.) This volume reports in detail the results of the Humayma Hydraulic Survey (1986-89) but also incorporates knowledge gained in subsequent excavations (including information gathered as recently as 2008). The contents are arranged in chapters that set the context for the study, catalogue water-supply systems and structures, detail the laboratory reports, and discuss the systems in the context of the ancient Near East. In addition the author has included contributed reports on the botanical and faunal remains from studies conducted between 1989 and 1995. Elegantly produced on coated stock with numerous photos, this volume is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation c2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
