Little Fingers

In a little town in Romania, a mass grave is discovered near the excavations of a Roman fort. Are the dead the victims of a medieval plague or, perhaps, of a Communist firing squad? And why are finger bones disappearing from the pit each night? The townspeople await a team of five Argentinean forensic anthropologists, specialists in "los desaparecidos," who will deliver a final verdict.
Meanwhile Petrus, a young archaeologist, spends the rainy days listening to his landlady and her friends reminiscing about their lives, gossiping, reading tea leaves; love and money make miraculous appearances; the chief of police gives statements to the newspapers; Colonel Spiru, head of the military investigators, stalks through the gravesite like an old tomcat; and up in the mountains, the hand of fate moves a humble priest into the path of history once again.
